Our Journey
Stanford Medicine pursues innovation and creativity, aspiring to take a leadership role in the health care sector. The sustainability teams strive to discover, develop, and support solutions to reduce environmental impacts while improving the health and well-being of staff, visitors, patients, and local communities. Stanford Medicine works collaboratively with the broader Stanford University community, recognizing that everyone in the institution is a valuable source of innovation, inspiration, and ideas. The Sustainability Department was founded in 2009 to lead and inspire sustainability efforts across Stanford Health Care. In 2021, Stanford Medicine Children’s Health continued its sustainability journey by developing a formal Sustainability Department for the organization.
Stanford Medicine has worked tirelessly to reduce its environmental footprint and create a culture of sustainability in the workplace and communities. To that end, in 2021, Stanford Health Care underwent a rebranding effort, formally creating the Sustainability Program Office. To kick off this new chapter, the team conducted a broad stakeholder visioning initiative that resulted in new multi-year sustainability targets and the establishment of cross-functional workgroups to drive progress. Stakeholders from the health care industry, Stanford Medicine Children’s Health, Stanford University, and community leaders all participated.
